Flatwoods is a city in the state of West Virginia USA . Located in Braxton County. In 2010, 277 people lived in the city. The city became famous after the appearance of the Flatwood Monster in 1952.

Geographical position
Located in the center of West Virginia, it is one of 4 cities in Braxton County. The total area of the city is 1.71 km². Flatwoods is a mile from the Interstate 79 exit , and has well-developed infrastructure - restaurants, motels, shops [1] .
History
Flatwoods was incorporated in 1902, but the settlement appeared on maps in 1873, and the city church, founded by pastor John Clark, appeared in 1830. The city was on the rail halfway between Clarksburg and Richwood .

According to the 2010 census, the Flatwoods population was 277 people (of which 48.4% were men and 51.6% were women), the city had 109 households and 74 families. In Flatwoods, there were 127 buildings with an average density of 74.3 buildings per square kilometer. Racial composition : white - 99.3%, Asians - 0.4% and representatives of two or more races - 0.4% [2] .
According to the 2010 census, the city population according to the age range was distributed as follows: 27.1% - residents under the age of 18, 2.5% - between 18 and 21 years old, 55.2% - from 21 to 65 years old and 15.2% - at the age of 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 41.2 years. For every 100 females in Flatwoods, there are 93.7 males, while for 100 adult females there are already 87.0 males of comparable age [2] .
Of 109 households, 67.9% were families: 50.5% of couples living together (22.0% with children under 18 years of age); 13.8% are women living without husbands and 3.7% are men living without wives. 32.1% did not have a family. On average, 2.54 people lead a household, and the average family size is 3.12 people. 28.4% of the population lived alone, 11.0% were single elderly people (over 65) [2] .

In 2014, out of 1,284 people over 16 years old, they had 230 jobs. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 34,750 per year, compared to $ 23,125 of the average annual income for women. In 2014, the median income for a family was estimated at $ 33,125, for a household - at $ 31,250. The per capita income is $ 12,600 per year. 24.1% of the total number of families in Flatwoods and 27.6% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census [2] .
