Offenbach's stage works, with the exception of the operas The Rhine Mermaids (The Rhine Ondine , Die Rheinnixen , 1864) and The Tales of Hoffmann (1881), are widely referred to as operettas, although only 16 of them were designated by the composer as operettas.
