Biography
Childhood
The son of Pietro Corona and Lucia "Tii" of the Philippines, who worked as peddlers, was born between Baselga di Pine and Trento . He spent the first years of his life in the province of Trento , until the family returned to his home settlement of Erto , in the Vajont valley of the Udine province (attributed to the province of Pordenone in 1968), where he lived the following years in the San Rocco contrade.
From childhood he hunted along with his father as a poacher, and it was in these mountains, in which most of his childhood was spent, a passion for mountains and mountaineering originated in Mauro. Already at the age of thirteen he makes the ascent of Mount Duranno (2688 meters above sea level).
After the birth of his brother, what happened a few months after his mother left the family, Mauro Corona was interested in reading: T Tolstoy , Dostoevsky and Cervantes became his favorite writers. At the same time he comprehends the art of sculpture on wood at his grandfather-carver.
After 8 years of study in Erto, he begins studying at a secondary school in the nearby Longgarone settlement in the province of Belluno . But on October 9, 1963, his life changed radically: a wave that overlapped across the Wyont dam literally sweeps away the lower part of Bellun's town and areas near the lake, between the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia-Julia regions, killing more than 2,000 people, although none of his family suffered during this disaster. Mauro Corona subsequently goes with his brother to Don Bosco College in Pordenone . For him, this is a difficult period, he is constantly tormented by nostalgia, a sense of life in captivity and longing for Erto's forests. However, college teachers increase his love of literature and support him in his studies. When his two brothers return to Erto, Mauro dreams of going to an art school in Ortisei , but his lack of money forces him to study at the Marinoni geodetic technical school in Udine , in which education was free.
From Mount Buskad to exploring Erto
A few years later, the Crown was expelled from school because he stopped learning in class, preferring to read Tex comics during class. In 1968 , his brother leaves in search of work in Germany , where in three months he will sink in the basin of the city of Paderborn . In the meantime, the Crown leaves the job of a laborer in Maniago and goes to work on a marble quarry on Mount Buskada. This hard work was facilitated by life in the midst of peaks, forests and meadows, which reminded him of his childhood.
He was forced to stop this work for the period of military service , which he began to L'Aquila , being called up in the part of the Alpine shooters . The service the Crown finished already in Tarvisio in a ski company. He returns a month later, as he spent 32 days in a strict detention cell for numerous atrocities while on duty.
Crown Sculptor
The quarry closes in the eighties and Mauro Corona is settled as a stone-cutter . Once in 1975, a passerby from Sacile notices his small sculptures and decides to buy them all. After some time, he ordered the sculpture “The Way of the Cross” from Mauro Corona as a gift to the church of San Giovanni del Tempio in Sacile . With the money from the sale of these sculptures, the Crown buys the necessary tools and begins to learn from Augusto Murer from Falcade the craft of the sculptor and develops technique and artistic knowledge. In 1975, Longaroneon organizes its first exhibition.
Climbing Crown
Meanwhile, Mauro Corona does not forget about his other big hobby - climbing . In 1977, he began to lay routes on the cliffs of Erto and Kasso , half of which are now visited by climbers from around the world. For several years, he climbed all the Friuli cliffs, after which he headed for Greenland and California to the cliffs of the Yosemite Valley. Today, many climbing routes are marked by his signature.
Crown Writer
The career of the writer Crown began in 1997 , when his friend the journalist published some of his stories in the newspaper Il Gazzettino . Since then, he has published a large number of books.
In his novels and stories, the Crown introduces the reader to a world that has practically disappeared: the life and traditions of the settlements of the Wyont Valley, an ecosystem that has experienced a severe shock after the tragedy. Characters and echoes of the past are revived in lines written by Mauro Corona, who passionately and a little sadly treats such topics as the relationship of man with nature, with its roots and with economic and technical development.
Recent years
The Crown continues to combine writing, wood sculpture and rock climbing with conferences, meetings and events; Participates in the filming of several documentaries, and also appeared in the film Vayont - dam of shame .
In 2002, the author of the comics, Paolo Kossi, published the work “The Crown - a Man from Erto's Forests” for Edizioni Biblioteca dell'Immagine . The comic book describes some of the events about which the Crown told the author, as well as about the adventures he had to go through in order to personally hear the stories of the Crown.
The works of Mauro Corona were translated into several languages, including Chinese, German, Spanish.
