Goryany ( Ukrainian: Goryany , Hungarian. Gerény ) - a district within the city of Uzhgorod in Ukraine . Located three kilometers south of the city center; in the city limits since 1970 .
History
The toponym was first mentioned in 1332 as Gheren . There are two versions of its origin: from the Ruthenian grief - “highlanders” or from the Hungarian görény - “ ferret ”.
King Bela IV instead of the destroyed old Uzhgorod castle founded a new fortress. From this fortress only a small church ( rotunda ) of the Gothic style with traces of frescoes of the XIV-XV centuries has been preserved. The oldest part of the church dates back to the 12th – 13th centuries and is designed in the Byzantine style (masonry walls using the opus mixtum technique).
Bela IV Castle, apparently, was destroyed in the XIV century. On its ruins, the Drugs laid a new castle palace, the remains of which were found in 1926 . Excavations of the monastery of the Order of Paul , founded in 1384, have not yet been completed.
In 1910, out of a population of 1173 people, the majority were Rusyns , with a significant number of Hungarians. Before the Trianon peace treaty, the Goryans belonged to the Ung region, the Ungvar region.
The Transcarpathian writer Mikhail Ivanovich Tomchaniy (Tomchani) was born in Goryany; (1914 - Uzhgorod, 1975). His father is Ivan Tomchani ( Hungarian Tomcsányi János ), mother Elizabeth Tomchani nee. Kepecs ( Hungarian Tomcsányiné szül. Kepecs Erzsébet ). The name of the writer in Goryany is the street where his father’s house stands.
