Shturman ( Dutch: stuurman , from stuur - “steering wheel” and man - “man”) - the second member of the racing crew, following the route according to the transcript , road book or a map, and giving the driver detailed directions for moving on the highway [1] . The navigator is engaged in orienteering in rally-raids (this skill is not required in the classic rally ), monitors compliance with the standards for speed and time, communicates with judges and controls the records on the map or in the navigational notebook (depending on the type of motorsport) [2] .

Navigator Tasks
The navigator plays an important role in the work of the racing crew. It is he who almost always carries out the relationship between the crew and the judges. Before the start of the competition, the navigator must prepare for them. He needs to study the rules of the competition, get and understand the referee’s documents, calculate the average speed, draw up working documents (route sheet, average speed table) [3] .
In his work, the navigator in a discipline called the classic rally uses independently made transcripts (“legends”) - a shorthand description of the route, which contains conditional descriptions of turns, landmarks and features of the route [4] . During the passage along the highway, the navigator directs the car’s movement mode, focusing on the transcript, prompting the driver with the direction of movement taking into account the selected speed. The navigator must ensure that the route’s travel schedule is followed, can quickly make corrections to it, make marks on the map in places of time control (HF), sudden control of time (HW) and in high-speed sections (SU) [3] [5] .
In rally raids , the crews do not have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the track in advance, so the navigator is issued a road book before the start of the race with a legend transcript written by representatives of the organizers of the competition. The task of the navigator is to correctly navigate in an unfamiliar area with the help of a road book and a map or GPS receiver [6] .
Relationship Between a Pilot and a Navigator
At times, the relationship of the pilot and the navigator can go beyond sports. Often you can see at a competition a couple consisting of brothers, as is the case with the brothers Gilles and Herve Panizzi or Per Karlsson (navigator against Ingvar Karlsson, with whom they won in Sweden in 1988). In Spain, the Vallejo brothers, the champions of Spain in 2009, have been performing together for several years, as have the brothers Jorge and Joaquin Riquelme in Chile, who jointly began their careers and since 2010 have become three times champions in their category. The Finnish pilot Markus Grenholm throughout his career spoke with Timo Rautiainen, who is married to his sister [7] .
