He graduated from the University of Basel (1951), a student of Jacques Handshin , then worked as his assistant until the death of Handshin in 1955. There he defended his thesis on the life and work of Guido d'Arezzo , in 1959 he was rehabilitated at the University of Zurich with research on Berno and German from Reichenau. He taught in Basel, published as a music critic at the Basel National-Zeitung .
Since 1967, an ordinary professor, head of the musicology department of the University of Basel. He made a number of ethnomusicological expeditions to Southeast Asia ( Malacca Peninsula in 1963, Bali Island in 1974, Indochina and Indonesia in 1979), while replenishing the university collection of musical instruments. Worked on the complete works of Arcangelo Corelli . In 1975-1978 one of the co-editors of the New Musical Newspaper . Since 1986, the supervisor of the Paul Sacher Foundation. In 1991, he retired.
Ash's research interests were wide and diverse. In addition to works on medieval musical theory and ethnomusicology (including the solid textbook “Non-European Music”, German Aussereuropäische Musik ; 1984-1987), he wrote a book about the life and work of Vladimir Vogel .
