At the beginning of his career, he worked under the direction of other architects, among whom the Dutch architect Eduard Kuipers should be especially noted. While working in the workshop of E. Kuipers de Klerk, he began to collaborate with two other founders of the Amsterdam school - Johan van der Mei and Pete Kramer .
In 1912 he took part in the design of Schepvarthuis (House of Shipping, Dutch. Scheepvaarthuis ), a large cooperative building built for six Dutch shipping companies, also together with van der Mei, who was the main customer for this project, and Kramer.
Despite the many non-ordinary building designs developed by de Klerk, very few of them were embodied in stone. One of the most famous buildings constructed by de Klerk’s designs is the Schip complex (Ship, Dutch Het Schip ), located in Amsterdam's Sparndammerbürth ( Dutch Spaarndammerbuurt ).
His Eigen Haard Estates project in Amsterdam (1913-1920) is an excellent example of a warm, humanistic approach to solving complex architectural problems.
Outside Amsterdam, de Klerk built the Beyenkorf department store ( Netherlands. De Bijenkorf ) in The Hague (together with Kramer and van der Mei).
