Biography

Ippolit Dyumulen was born in 1897 in the family of the famous Moscow architect Ippolit Ippolitovich Dyumulen and Valentina Alekseevna Kunina (daughter of the wealthy merchant Alexei Kunin). His great-grandfather - Heinrich Dumulen - a doctor of the Napoleonic army , was wounded near Kovno . After recovery, Henry married the daughter of the owner of the estate Rufine, who looked after him after being wounded, and remained in Russia [1] .

Ippolit Dyumulen graduated from the Moscow real school. Voskresensky. In 1924, he entered the MV Lomonosov Moscow Institute in the Department of Motor Transport of the Faculty of Mechanics, which he graduated in 1928, receiving certificate No. 5217 (qualification - mechanical engineer).

In 1930, he was sent with a group of engineers to the United States of America , where he studied the experience of creating a large automotive industry [1] . In particular, he had to get acquainted with the largest automobile plants of Ford and Studebaker companies.

Dyumulen was a participant in the purchase from the Ford company in the complete form of a car factory along with car models produced on it. The plant was installed in Nizhny Novgorod . This factory also produced the “one and a half” truck, which became famous in the early years of World War II .

Upon his return from America, Dumoulin wrote the book “American Automotive Industry” (1932), which emphasized that the modern automobile industry (contemporary at that time) is the basis for the economic development of mechanical engineering in our country and the basis for creating modern military and civilian vehicles. This book was published in the library of the magazine “ Behind the Wheel ” [2] . In 1935, another of his books was published in the journal’s library - “How to Fight for Fuel Economy” [3] .

Dyumulen was fond of motorcycling (he had a Harley motorcycle ), participated in car races and motor races in which new designs of cars and motorcycles were tested at that time.

In the 30s of the XX century he was a member of the editorial board of the magazine “Behind the Wheel”, was one of the leading authors of the magazine [1] .

Since 1933, Dumoulin lectured at the Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization of the RKV named after I.V. Stalin in the Department of Armored Cars (senior lecturer, associate professor, military engineer I rank) [1] . The department trained personnel for the Soviet army and the defense industry of the Soviet Union. During these years, Dyumulen trained many specialists, some of whom later took a leading position in the Soviet automobile industry and in the production of military equipment.

Dumoulin did a great job of testing all domestic and a large number of foreign motorcycles. Being the chairman of the State Commission for Testing, he largely contributed to the creation of the first brands of domestic motorcycles IZH-1 and L-300 . Under his leadership, the first stand for testing motorcycles was developed [4] .

In 1938, Dumoulin received the degree of candidate of technical sciences [4] .

In 1939, a new book was published by Dumoulin - “Armored Cars”. In 1940, he participated in a motorcycle prototype review for the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . On the advice of Dumoulin, the decision was made to develop a motorcycle, which later received the designation M-72 [5] .

By the beginning of World War II, Dumoulin had the rank of colonel . By type of work, he was associated with many designers of engines and military equipment that became famous in subsequent years.

Dyumulen, actively advocated the creation of motorized units, pointed out their important role in protecting against a possible aggressor (he specifically pointed to fascist Germany ), urged to quickly launch the production of army motorcycles such as BMW-R71. On a denunciation of one of the close people of his family circle, Dumoulin was arrested. He was taken straight from the lecture [1] [6] [6] .

He died in custody in 1942.

in 1957, Dumoulin was posthumously rehabilitated with the wording “for the lack of corpus delicti”.
