Life and work

V. Vorringer began his scientific career as a literary critic and philologist, but soon began to deal with historical and cultural problems. Among his teachers are Heinrich Rückert , Georg Simmel and Heinrich Wölflin . The most characteristic is the research methodology of the scientist in his dissertation “ Abstraction and feeling ” ( Abstraktion und Einfühlung ), which he defended in Berne in 1907. In 1908, she published a separate publication in Munich. In this work, the author divides the various trends in art as a whole as an abstraction, i.e. abstracted human reactions to a randomly changing world and its precarious, fragile place in it, and sensuality, which he understands as a kind of natural entity inherent in a person. The fundamental formula of the philosopher is his phrases: Aesthetic pleasure is objective (i.e., concretized) self - enjoyment and we enjoy ourselves in the forms of works of art . In his works, W. Warringer, together with his colleague Alois Riegl, creates the basis for understanding, in line with the European cultural tradition, such artistic phenomena as classical modernism and expressionism. Thus, according to art historian Bernhard Myers, W. Warringer, along with Henri Bergson (the work “Creative Development” of the latter), made a significant contribution to the ideological foundation of German expressionism.

After receiving a degree in defending a dissertation “Problems of Form in Gothic” in 1909 in Bern, W. Vorringer has been teaching as an assistant professor since 1915, and in 1925-1928 as a professor at the Institute of Art History at the University of Bonn. In 1928 he became a professor at the University of Koenigsberg. Since 1945 - professor at the University of Galle. In 1950, the scientist left the GDR and moved to West Germany.

He was married to the artist Marte Warringer.
