Akyn Birdal is a Turkish politician and human rights activist. From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the Great National Assembly from the party of a democratic society , from 2009 to 2011 - from the party of peace and democracy . The Honorary President of the Turkish Human Rights Association , from 1992 to 1998, was its chairman.

Biography
He graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture of Ankara University . To obtain a master’s degree, he entered the University of Gazi [1] , but was forced to interrupt his career after the coup that happened in 1980 [2] .
In 1986, he became one of the founders of the Turkish Human Rights Association, as well as its Secretary General. In 1992 he was elected its chairman [3] . On May 12, 1998, an assassination attempt was committed on Birdal, two killers fired 13 bullets at him [4] . Responsibility for the attempt was claimed by the Turkish Revenge Brigade [5] . In 1999, Birdal was sentenced to 20 months in prison for violating Section 312 of the Turkish Criminal Code (inciting racial or religious hatred to disobey the law), for his speeches in 1995–96 [4] [6] . After that, he was recognized as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International [7] . The European Court of Human Rights, having examined the Birdal case, acknowledged that Articles 10 (Freedom of expression) and 6 (Right to a fair trial) of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms [8] were violated against him.
In 2002, Birdal took part in the creation of the Socialist Democratic Party of Turkey , he also became its chairman, but refused this post after he was elected vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights [2] . In 2007, he ran as an independent candidate during the parliamentary elections , was elected a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly from Diyarbakir . He joined the party of a democratic society, then the party of peace and democracy.
At the end of 2015, he became one of the signatories of the statement of 127 intellectuals and journalists, which condemned the Turkish police’s seizure of the holding [9] .
