History

Samara for a long time remained a city in which there were no monuments to soldiers who died in local wars. In 1995-1996. in Samara, a competition was held for the project of such a monument, and it was decided to combine 2 projects for the monument - Moscow and St. Petersburg, but the matter stopped at the foundation stage.

The idea of erecting a monument to the Samara people who fell in local wars was again raised when a memorial plaque dedicated to Hero of Russia Vitaly Talabaev , who died on BMD-1 with the whole crew in 1999 during the Second Chechen War , was opened at Samara School No. 64. In 2000, on the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, the Samara city administration promised to open the monument on August 2, 2001.

The memorial was erected according to the project of the Honored Sculptor of the Russian Federation Boris Cherstvoy. It is dedicated to the Samara people who fell during 33 local conflicts of the USSR and Russia. The memorial consists of 5 tall pylon-candles made of Ural marble, with a flame cast from bronze. On the pylons are carved the names of the countries where the soldiers fought. On the memorial wall of the unfolded sheets of marble, 463 names of heroes with titles are knocked out. Subsequently, a bronze monument was erected to a soldier of hot spots. The memorial was built with funds from the city and regional budgets, as well as donations from citizens, its cost amounted to about 10 million rubles.

The opening of the monument was timed to the 15th anniversary of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and took place on October 4, 2001. Traditionally, solemn rallies are held here on February 15 on Memorial Day of soldiers-internationalists [1] .
