World Polio Day

World Polio Day (World Polio Day ) was established at the initiative of Rotary International, an international non-governmental organization, and is celebrated annually on October 24th . The purpose of the event is to draw the attention of the world community to the problem of the incidence of poliomyelitis and its consequences, as well as to indicate the need for timely preventive measures [1] .

The date of the event is timed to the birthday of Jonas Edward Salk , an American epidemiologist and virologist who developed an inactivated vaccine ( IPV , IPV ) from 1952 to 1955 against poliomyelitis .

The use of the inactivated (killed) and oral (live) polio vaccine (the live vaccine of Sabin , OPV , English OPV ), developed by virologist Albert Bruce Sabin , led to the creation in 1988 of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative ( GILP Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI ) [2] .

Since the creation of HILP, the number of cases has decreased by more than 99% [3] .
