Name Origin

The first part - Monplaisir, is given by its location in the square of the same name. The square got its name from the quarter in which it was located. At the beginning of the 19th century, a certain Baron Henri de Tournelles ( French Henry des Tournelles ) was a major landowner in this area. In 1828, he chopped his land into about 400 plots and put up for sale. To improve and accelerate sales, the baron gave his projects attractive names: “The Terrain of Carelessness” ( Sanssouci ; French Campagnes de Sans-Souci ) and “The Village of My Pleasure” ( Monplaisir ; French Village Village de Monplaisir ) - these names are still then preserved in the names of the Lyon quarters [3] .

The second part of the name is given after the inventors of cinema, the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière , whose former villa is still located in close proximity to the current metro station [2] .
