Geographical position
Elizabeth is located in the north of West Virginia and is the administrative center of Wirth County. Located on the Little Canova River at the intersection of state roads 14, 53 and 5 [1] . According to the United States Census Bureau, Elizabeth has a total area of 1.37 square kilometers.
History
In 1796, William Buchemp settled on the site of the future city, he acquired 1400 acres of land near the Little Canova River . These places became known as the Beauchamp's Mills. In 1817, the settlement was renamed Elizabeth in honor of Elizabeth Woodyard, the wife of the founder’s son David Buchemp. In 1822, it received a city charter from the Virginia General Assembly [1] .
Population
According to the 2010 census, the population of Elizabeth was 823 people (of which 47.0% were men and 53.0% were women), the city had 377 households and 228 families. Racial composition : white - 98.4% and representatives of two or more races - 0.9% [2] .
Of the 377 households, 39.3% were married couples (11.9% with children under 18 years of age), women lived without husbands in 17.0% of households, men lived without wives in 4.0% of households, 39, 5% were not a family. On average, 2.18 people are households, and the average family size is 2.79 people.
According to the 2010 census, the city population according to the age range was distributed as follows: 22.6% - residents under 18 years of age, 3.4% - between 18 and 21 years old, 56.9% - from 21 to 65 years old and 17.1% - at the age of 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 40.7 years. For every 100 females there are 88.8 males in Elizabeth, with 83.6 males of comparable age per 100 adult females [2] .
In 2014, out of 649 able-bodied residents over 16 years old, 272 people had jobs. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 26,667 per year, compared to $ 29,250 in average annual income for women. In 2014, the median income for a family was estimated at $ 28,542, for a household - at $ 28,802. The per capita income is $ 13,338. 35.4% of the total number of families in Elizabeth and 41.4% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census [2] .
