History

The first settlers in these places, then part of the Monongalia district, appeared in the 1780s: these were William Englin (the owner of the land on which the city subsequently arose) and Daniel Booth (owned a ferry that carried out commercial transportation across the river), therefore the original The names of these places are “Ford Englina” (Anglin's Ford) and “Bout's Ferry” (Booth's Ferry). Subsequently, William's friend - Wilson - married the daughter of Bout, and in 1818 built a mill on the river.

In March 1843, the Virginia district of Monongalia was divided into a number of smaller districts - this is how the Barbour district appeared. The Bout crossing area was chosen as the location of the county administrative center, and a city arose there. Due to the fact that the district was named after Virginia's lawyer Philip Pendleton Barbour, it was decided to use his personal name, taken in the female form - “Philippa” as the name of the administrative center. However, due to the incorrect pronunciation, as well as the erroneous opinion that the city was named after the ancient Macedonian city of Philippi , the incorrect spelling of “Filippi” was fixed. In 1844, the city of Filippi received a city charter [1] .

In 1852, a covered bridge was built across the river, which became one of the attractions of the city and made the ferry unnecessary [1] .

On June 3, 1861, one of the first civil war battles took place in the area of the city [1] .

On February 1, 1871, Filippi became an incorporated city.

On January 25, 1884, a narrow-gauge railway reached the city, and in 1891 the company Baltimore and Ohio Railroad rebuilt the road to the European gauge . The development of road transport in the 20th century reduced the importance of rail transport, and the last stop of a passenger train in Filippi occurred in 1956.
