Project 21900 icebreakers

Project 21900 (21900M) icebreakers are Russian auxiliary diesel-electric icebreakers of a new generation. Linear diesel-electric icebreakers with a capacity of about 18 MW of the project 21900 (LK16) are designed to work as a linear icebreaker while ensuring high maneuverability and ice passage (provided continuous movement in ice with ice thickness up to 1.5 meters), towing vessels and other floating structures during ice and clean water, assistance to ships and rescue operations in ice conditions and clean water; delivery of necessary equipment and participation in oil spill response operations using the equipment on board; ensuring the implementation of underwater technical work using equipment and special systems installed on a ship in the areas of drilling and oil production platforms, laying of underwater pipelines, seabed research, search and rescue operations; perform the functions of a firefighting vessel in extinguishing fires on ships, drilling and oil-producing platforms; perform a number of other special works at sea.

Construction 21900M

The lead linear diesel-electric icebreaker of the modernized project 21900M (LK-16) "Vladivostok" was laid on October 17, 2012 . Shipbuilder: Vyborg Shipyard PJSC. April 29, 2014 was launched. Elena Schegoleva, deputy head of the Vladivostok city administration, became the godmother. On November 18, 2014, work is underway to install propeller speakers. December 15, 2014 began mooring trials, which must be completed before April 2015. Estimated commissioning May 09, 2015. According to a message dated August 12, 2015, Fluidmecanica supplied a 400 kW electric towing winch with a weight of 370 tons, anchor windlass and mooring winches. September 12 began running trials.

On August 5, 2013 at 12:00 pm, the ceremony of the beginning of the formation of the 21900M icebreaker hull on the Atlant self-submersible barge platform took place at the Vyborg Shipyard.

For reference: the self-submersible barge "Atlant" was built on the VSW for 10 months. It allows you to build ships up to 150 meters long and up to 32 meters wide and is designed for year-round and round-the-clock operation. During its construction, special steel grades were used that allow the watercraft to operate in ice.

The barge is intended for launching ship hulls, rolling hull structures weighing up to 5,000 tons and carrying out transport operations for the transfer of cargo outside the waters of the Vyborg Shipbuilding Plant. In addition, on the deck of a barge, shells will be assembled and launched under the project 21900M icebreakers under construction at the shipyard.

The main characteristics of the barge: The length is 130 meters, the width of the building berth is 35 meters, the height of the side to the building berth is at least 7.3 meters, and the draft on the water line is about 5.3 meters. The mass of the object transported in the mode of a transport pontoon is about 10,000 tons. The mass of the descent object by the docking method is not more than 8600 tons.

The second linear diesel-electric icebreaker (LK-16) “Murmansk” was laid on December 26, 2012 . Shipbuilder: Vyborg Shipyard PJSC and Arctech Helsinki, a Finnish shipyard, which since December 2010 is a joint venture of the Korean company STX Finland Oy and the Russian United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) (building number 509). On March 25, 2015, at the shipyard in Helsinki, an icebreaker was launched and a naming ceremony was held. The governor of the Murmansk region M. Kovtun became the godmother of the icebreaker. She also wished the icebreaker a happy trip, stressing that he would contribute to the development of the Arctic region. Before launching the icebreaker, Fluidmecanica completed the mooring equipment. Estimated commissioning in August 2015. According to a message dated August 12, 2015, Fluidmecanica supplied a 400 kW electric towing winch with a weight of 370 tons, anchor windlass and mooring winches.

On July 24, 2013, the leadership of the FBU “State Marine Rescue Service of Russia” visited the ARCTECH plant in the city of Helsinki. During the visit, the timing of the completion of the icebreaker was discussed.

The third linear diesel-electric icebreaker (LK-16) “Novorossiysk” was laid on December 12, 2012. Shipbuilder: Vyborg Shipyard PJSC (building number 231). On May 7, 2014, the formation of the hull on the self-submersible barge platform “Atlant” was begun. On November 18, 2014, the last feed section was installed on the Atlant-Barge and the formation of the main hull was completed. Launched on October 29, 2015 [1] . PJSC “Vyborg Shipyard” at the end of December plans to transfer FSUE “Rosmorport” a diesel-electric icebreaker of the project 21900M “Novorossiysk”. According to Interfax, referring to the General Director of the Supreme Soviet, Alexander Solovyov, the transfer of the icebreaker will take place in St. Petersburg, the approximate deadline is December 23-26 of the current year.

Project Features 21900M

Compared with the project 21900 at 21900M, there are a number of design changes, in particular: the helipad was transferred to the bow of the vessel, the space on the deck of the tank under the helipad with anchor-mooring devices was closed; a superstructure developed from side to side; increased crew; the possibility of placing special personnel; an overhead crane is installed; increased power of the propulsion complex; reinforced hull structures to reduce vibration; corps reinforcements in the ice belt region, and steering columns correspond to the Icebreaker7 ice reinforcement category , instead of Icebreaker6; equipment and systems have been installed to ensure compliance with international requirements for limiting harmful emissions and ballast treatment; an innovative monitoring system for ice loads on the hull; increased autonomy of swimming.

In Nizhny Novgorod in the Vympel design bureau it is planned to design the next series of the icebreaker - 21900М2. The task of the designers will include, among other things, the need to reduce the level of air pollution, as well as to work out the possibility of strengthening the icebreaker to the class “Icebreaker7” [1] .
