Sayer gained fame in the early 1970s when he performed in Pierrot's costume and make-up and wrote songs for more famous artists (in particular, Giving It Away - the first solo hit of Roger Daltry from The Who ). His vocals could be heard on some albums of the Alan Parsons Project .

By the middle of the decade, he had grown curls, began to wear leather jackets and turned into one of the most fashionable characters of the time. Almost all of his major hits were released between 1975 and 1977: Moonlighting , You Make Me Feel Like Dancing (1st place in the USA, Grammy Award), When I Need You (1st place in the USA and Great Britain).

In 1979, the All-Union record company “ Melody ” released the album “Leo Sayer Sings” in the USSR (Chrysalis license, the prototype of the same year's album “ The Very Best Of Leo Sayer”) [1] .

Sayer actively recorded in the following decades, but after the song More Than I Can Say (1980) in his repertoire there were no new hits and he fell out of the cage of the leaders of world pop music. Meanwhile, his songs of 1975-1977 were stably performed by stars of the first magnitude ( Rod Stewart , Phil Collins , Celine Dion ).

Trying to regain its former popularity, in 2007, 58-year-old Sayer took part in the Celebrity Big Brother reality show . Two years earlier, a dance remix of his classic hit Thunder in My Heart (1977) led the UK national hit parade.
