History
From the territory on which the base was built, local residents were forcibly taken out. Camp Courtney was opened as a US naval base in January 1956 when selected units of the 3rd Marine Division were transferred here from Camp McGill , Yokosuka, Kanagawa. Initially, the base was called Camp Tengan ( Eng. Camp Tengan ) [1] . The first units of the Marine Corps settled in Kvonset’s huts, Nissen’s huts and Butler’s buildings. Most of the huts were reinforced to protect buildings during the typhoons that frequent the Ryukyu Islands. The first to arrive at the camp were the headquarters battalion, the orchestra of the division, and the cargo battalion.
The base is home to many military families. On its territory there is a cinema, a market, a grocery store, a medical and dental clinic, a post office, a church and a bank [3] . Many Marines living at McToerus base are on duty at the Courtney camp.
