History

In 1855, Jacques Offenbach received a license to open his own theater in Paris. The troupe of the theater first performed on the summer stage on July 5, 1855 in a small theater on the Champs Elysees - this day went down in history as the birthday of the operetta. On July 28, 1855, a winter scene was opened - in the Choiseul Passage, the former theater of Comte.

The first productions of the theater were Offenbach’s parody-satirical musical buffoonery “The Two Blind People” and “Village Violinists” (1855), which brought the theater wide popularity. In 1856, Offenbach staged at the theater his operettas “Ba-ta-clan” (“Chinese musical trinket”), “Postman - hostage”, “Nanny”, etc., in 1857 - the operetta “Croquefer”. Leo Tolstoy, after visiting the theater, wrote in his diary (entry for March 6/18, 1857): “I went to the Bouffes Parisiens. Truly French. It’s funny. Comic is so good-natured and without reflection that everything is permissible to him ” [1] . Until 1858, predominantly one-act operettas were staged at the theater, since authors who wrote for the Buff-Parisienne Theater were forbidden to display more than four characters in their plays.

In 1858, the ban was lifted and premieres of multi-act performances with any number of characters took place. First, the operetta “ Orpheus in Hell ” of Offenbach was staged: the ancient myth of Orpheus became an occasion for a witty parody of a traditional type opera and at the same time a bourgeois - aristocratic society of the Second Empire . Offenbach was an excellent theater composer - dynamic, cheerful, brilliant and elegant. Admittedly, it was he who created the operetta as an artistic whole and defined the most important features of the genre.

Then the operettas of Georgette Georgette, Roland in the Ronsevalles Gorge by Herve and others were staged. The theater’s repertoire also included the opera The Director of the Theater by Mozart , the bourlette Signor Bruskino or The Random Son by Rossini , Adan ’s lyrical comedy Violet Puppets and others.

In the mid-1860s, financial difficulties and the hostile attitude of the press forced Offenbach to leave the Buff-Parisienne Theater [2] .

In 1868-1879, the theater was directed by the playwright Jules Noriak .
