Biography
Sally Oldfield was born March 8, 1947 in Dublin , Ireland . With her brothers, she grew up in the catholic family of their mother, Maureen. Childhood passed in Reading , Berkshire . From the age of 4 years, Sally studied ballet and was the winner of numerous competitions in all dance styles, including ballet, step and modern dances. At the age of 11, she won a scholarship to the Royal Dance Academy located in Holland Park, London, and 2 years later the Royal Ballet School was sent to the White Lodge with honor. However, two years later she left the ballet, reaching three levels of “A” in class “A” in her studies. She also studied classical piano, receiving class "7". She spent all her school years at St. Joseph, in Reading, where she became friends with Marianne Faithfull . Oldfield then studied English literature and philosophy at the University of Bristol .
Musical career
Sally Oldfield began her musical career in the early 1968s when they made joint demos with brother Mike - these sessions were offered and controlled by Mick Jagger , the further fate of those records is unknown. [2]
Soon after, with their brother Mike, they found the acoustic folk duo The Sallyangie . In a duet, they record their first and only album on the recommendation of Pentangle guitarist John Renborn, whom Mike met at the Troubadour Folk Club in Bristol. The album “Children of the Sun” was recorded in August 1968. The songs from it were mostly written by Sally Oldfield and the album contains some of her brother’s early guitar work. Guest artists were Terry Cox on drums and Ray Warleigh on flute. Ten years later, her song “Mirrors” became a hit in the UK Singles Chart and, contrary to the rumors of the time about the composition, was Sally Oldfield's own work, and was not written by Mike.
The debut solo album, “Water Bearer”, was released in 1978. The track “Mirrors”, included in the 2nd edition of the album, took 19th place in the UK Singles Chart between 1978-1979 and held its position for 13 weeks. [3] Also the most successful were the next two LPs and fragments of the Celebration and Mandala albums. Since then, the singer has released 15 solo albums.
With the cessation of the record label Bronze Records , Oldfield moved to Germany, where her music career has continued since then. Most of her albums since 1983 have not been released in the UK. She worked with many German record producers and musicians, including Gunter Mende and Candy DeRouge, which is why some of her later albums were produced in Germany and, as a rule, in terms of music and content are very close to the mainstream . Oldfield regularly appeared on national television and radio and performed several European concert tours, the last of which was in 2003 in Germany. More recently, it seems that Sally Oldfield is returning to music and is now more focused on the Anglo-American audience, shifting her image closer to esotericism .
Sally Oldfield does not knowingly copy Mike's manner, it is simply impossible, but his name helps her a lot. Stylistically, the music of Sally Oldfield is a hybrid of Anglo-Irish folk music and rather straightforward rock on dance-beat rhythm. Among the most notable compositions by Sally Oldfield, in addition to the already mentioned “Mirrors” (1979), it is necessary to note the songs “Mandala” (1981) and “Silver Dagger” (1987).
Other appearances
Oldfield performed backing vocals on her brother Mike's albums: Tubular Bells , Ommadawn , and Incantations . She also performed her part in the album “Tr3s Lunas” in 2002 and during the re-recording of “Tubular Bells 2003” in 2003. In addition, she worked with recordings of her other brother, Terry. In addition, she performed the song “Shadow of the Hierophant” from the 1975 album “ Voyage of the Acolyte ” by Steve Hackett .
