Biography

Demyan Arsentyevich Piven was born into a peasant family in the village of Stepantsy of the Kanevsky district of the Kiev province (currently the Kanevsky district of the Cherkasy region ). He graduated from the 5th grade of the school. He left the village in Zaporozhye, worked on the construction of the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station , then as a loader at the Zaporizhia Coke and Chemical Plant.

On March 4, 1944, he was called up to the ranks of the Red Army by the Kanevsky military commissariat. Since April 17, 1944 on the fronts of World War II .

By order of the 515th Rifle Regiment of July 30, 1944, sniper Piven was awarded the medal “For Courage” .

On July 30, 1944, Junior Sergeant Piven was among the first to cross the Vistula River in the vicinity of the towns of Zastuv Polyanowski and Vilkow ( Lublin Voivodeship ). On August 20, he destroyed 13 enemy soldiers and officers from his sniper rifle with fire. By order of 134 rifle divisions of November 8, 1944, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree.

On January 14, 1945, during the breakthrough of enemy fortifications in the area of ​​the village of Paenkow (Pshilenk, Povyat-Zvolensky, Masovian Voivodeship ) 12 kilometers west of the city of Pulawy, sniper Junior Sergeant Piven killed several enemy soldiers in battle. He was wounded, but did not leave the battlefield. In total, by January 1945, there were 22 killed enemy soldiers on the battle account. By order of the troops of the 69th army of February 13, 1945, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 2nd degree.

On April 17-19, 1945, in battles on the left bank of the Oder , 6 km west of the village of Lebus, Sergeant Piven was the first to attack, burst into the enemy’s trench, destroyed grenades and personal fire with an officer and more than 10 enemy soldiers, incapacitated 2 machine gun points . He was wounded, but remained in service. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st degree.

In August 1945, Sergeant Piven discharged, returned to Zaporozhye, worked as a foreman in the transport department of a coke plant.

Demyan Arsentievich Piven died March 23, 1953.
