Gennady Sergeyevich Afanasyev ( 8, 1990 , Simferopol , Crimean region , Ukrainian SSR ) - one of the defendants in the case of the so-called "Sentsov group terrorists", was arrested before the FSB detained Oleg Sentsova and Alexander Kolchenko [1] .

Biography
From 2007 to 2012 he studied at the Tauride National University. V. I. Vernadsky in the specialty "Jurisprudence" [2] . He was fond of sports, music, travel, foreign languages, photography. It was photography that became the main hobby for Gennady, which turned into work [3] .
Until the spring of 2014, he was not engaged in social and political activities, but during the accession of Crimea to Russia, he supported the movement for a united Ukraine, participated in protests, bought and distributed food and basic necessities to military units in Crimea that were blocked. Before the referendum in Crimea, Gennady participated in recording videos in support of pro-Ukrainian movements [4] .
Harassment and Arrest
On May 9, 2014 he was detained in Simferopol on charges of participating in the terrorist community organized by Oleg Sentsov . At the preliminary investigation, he pleaded guilty, collaborated with the investigation, gave evidence that formed the basis of the charges against Oleg Sentsov , Alexander Kolchenko and himself [5] .
At the end of May 2014, information appeared on the FSB website that Afanasyev, along with Oleg Sentsov , Alexander Kolchenko and Alexei Chirniy, was a member of the Right Sector sabotage and terrorist group and was preparing a series of terrorist attacks in Crimea. Immediately after the publication of this publication, Russian federal channels showed stories in which Afanasyev admitted that he was preparing terrorist acts and called Sentsov the leader of the group [1] .
On December 24, 2014, in a closed session, the Moscow City Court found Afanasyev guilty of terrorism and sentenced to seven years in prison with a sentence in a maximum security colony on charges of crimes under Part 2 of Art. 205.4 (“Participation in the terrorist community”), two episodes of paragraph “a”, part 2 of article 205 (“Terrorist act committed by an organized group”), part 1 of article 30, paragraph "a" part 2 of article 205 (“Preparation for a terrorist act”), part 3 of article 30, part 3, article 222 ("Attempted illegal acquisition of weapons and explosives") of the Criminal Code.
According to investigators, Gennady Afanasyev was part of the Sentsov group, which was created in Crimea in April 2014 on the instructions of the Right Sector , was involved in the arson on April 14, 2014 of the building of the Russian Community of Crimea and on April 18 of the local branch of United Russia . He is also accused of preparing the explosion of a monument to Lenin on Station Square in Simferopol and the Eternal Flame memorial [6] .
Afanasyev admits that he did take part in the arson of the doors and windows of the offices of the Russian Community of Crimea and United Russia, which wore exclusively hooligan motives (the damage in the amount of 30 thousand rubles was repaid by Afanasyev’s mother before the trial), but he didn’t do the rest [ 5] .
Prosecution Witness
On July 31, 2015, speaking in court in the case of Oleg Sentsov and Alexander Kolchenko as a witness for the prosecution, Afanasyev said that he was refusing the evidence given earlier, since it had been given under pressure. The defendants greeted these words with applause. [7]
According to the lawyer, Afanasyev was beaten with boxing gloves, put on a gas mask, squeezing air, injected gas into the gas mask, causing vomiting, tortured with electric shock, including attaching wires to the genitals, threatening to rape with a soldering iron, deprived of sleep for ten days. This forced him to sign the evidence necessary for the investigation [8] .
On August 12, doctors of the pre-trial detention center-1 in Rostov-on-Don recorded a hematoma in Gennady Afanasyev and sent documents to the Investigative Committee [9] .
On August 19, the Memorial human rights center recognized Gennady Afanasyev as a political prisoner [10] .
September 4, 2015 Afanasyev was transferred to the Komi Republic [11] .
In December 2015, the Russian branch of Amnesty International launched a campaign calling for the annulment of the sentences of Gennady Afanasyev, Oleg Sentsov and Alexander Kolchenko [12] .
Extradition
In March 2016, Ukraine turned to Russia with a request to extradite four convicted Ukrainians, including Gennady Afanasyev [13] .
On June 14, 2016 Afanasyev and convicted Yury Soloshenko were pardoned by Russian President Vladimir Putin [14] and sent to Ukraine in exchange for Odessa journalists Elena Glishchinsky and Vitaliy Didenko [15] . The latter were accused of organizing the People’s Rada of Bessarabia, which the Ukrainian law enforcement authorities accused of creating conditions for tearing the southern districts of Odessa region [13] .
