Karlsplatz ( German Karlsplatz - Charles Square, also unofficially Stachus , German Stachus ) is one of the largest squares in the center of Munich ( Bavaria , Germany ), the largest transport hub and one of the most significant architectural ensembles of the city. The square got its official name “Karlsplatz” in 1787 in honor of the unpopular elector Charles IV Theodore . The name Stachus [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] is common among local residents and the media - the unofficial name of the square in honor of the Beim Stachus pub, owned by Mathias Eustachius Föderl, nicknamed Eustachi in 1728. The pub was located on the site of the square and successfully worked until the construction of the square began. [7]

Architecture

The main building, dominant in the architectural ensemble of the square, is located on the eastern side. This is the Charles Gate , the Gothic gate of the destroyed medieval fortifications, as well as two large concave houses to the right and left of the gate (architect Gabriel von Sidl ( English ) 1899-1902). In front of the Charles Gate, the first mention of which dates back to 1301 and until 1791 was called the Neuhauser Gate, there is a huge fountain that operates in the summer months. In winter, an ice skating rink in the open is being built in its place. The most significant building on the opposite western side is the non-baroque Palace of Justice and the building of the Kauffhof Gallery shopping complex, the first post-war department store in Munich (architect Theo Pabst, 1950-1951).

The underpass under the square accommodates a large shopping complex. Between Stachus and Marienplatz is the main pedestrian area of the city (Neuhauser Strasse / Kaufinger Strasse), where there are numerous shops and restaurants.

The entrance to the Karlsplatz (Stachus) station of the Munich metro and city train is under the square. Stachus is also a major interchange hub for the Munich tram system, with four-way stops located on Altstadtring, the old city's road system.
