History and Description
The history of the coat of arms of Samarkand in ancient and medieval periods has not been investigated. In the era of Mirzo Ulugbek and Yalangtush Bahadur, the coat of arms of the city was the image of a tiger or a lion with a sun (see the article Leo and the Sun ). In the Soviet period in 1969, the emblem of Samarkand was developed, but the opposition of the central authorities did not allow it to be approved. The city government held special competitions in 1968 - 1969 and in 1975 - 1976 , but the proposed coat of arms options were not accepted due to various reasons [2] .
At that time, a resident of Samarkand, a famous artist, author of many famous paintings and monuments, Grigory Ilyich Ulko, participated in competitions to develop a new coat of arms of Samarkand. Having developed several options, Ulko settled on the image of a winged leopard, relying on the tradition of images of winged creatures among Sogdians and the image of his cat , who was nicknamed Prokhor [2] .
The coat of arms of Samarkand, according to Gregory Ulko, is described as follows: in the center of the round red Sogdian shield there is a snow leopard with wings, in the lower part there is a golden wavy belt that symbolizes the Zarafshan river (translated as bearing gold ), a seven-pointed blue star is located above the leopard - a sign of perfection , science , art , rich in historical and modern architecture [1] .
On the coat of arms of Samarkand, which is currently used, on a round red Sogdian shield there is a white leopard with a raised right paw (this is a pose of blessing). At the feet of a leopard, the golden river Zeravshan flows, and a turquoise seven-pointed star hangs overhead [2] .
Interesting Facts
Although the snow leopard does not live in Samarkand or in its environs (there is only information similar to the legends that report on the leopards in Samarkand), this particular animal is depicted in the coat of arms. According to some scholars, the image of a leopard has been symbolic since ancient times, starting from Sogdiana . For example, on the portal of the Sherdor madrasah portal of the Registan ensemble there are two images, presumably a tiger or a leopard. According to others, the coat of arms depicts not a snow leopard, but an ordinary leopard, tiger or lioness [2] .
