Evangelos “Vangelis” Meimarakis ( Greek Ευάγγελος “Βαγγέλης” Μεϊμαράκης ; December 14, 1953 , Athens ) - Greek lawyer and politician. From 2006 to 2009, Minister of National Defense of Greece. Biography
Evangelos Meimarakis was born in Athens. Joined the New Democracy Party in 1974. During his studies at the university, the Pantheon took part in the work of student unions. He was a founding member of ONNED, the youth organization of the New Democracy Party. Member of the Greek Parliament since 1989. He served as Deputy Minister of Culture (for Sports) from 1992 to 1993. The General Secretary of the New Democracy until his appointment as Minister of Defense on February 15, 2006 (until October 7, 2009). From June 29, 2012 to February 6, 2015, the speaker of the Greek Parliament.
In July 2015, after the Greeks voted against the adoption of the EU plan in a referendum , Antonis Samaras resigned as the leader of the New Democracy, and Meimarakis became the party’s interim leader. [one]
On August 20, 2015, after the resignation of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras , Meimarakis receives a mandate to form an interim government. The interim prime minister was chairman of the Supreme Court of the country Vasiliki Tanu-Khrestofilu. [2]
In January 2016, he lost the election of the head of the New Democracy party, Kyriakos Mitsotakisu [3] .
