Name Origin
Two versions of the name Bersenevskaya embankment are likely:
- from an old bersen ( gooseberry );
- from the Berseni lattice that existed in the 16th century , blocking the street from “dashing people”, set by the duma nobleman I.N. Bersen-Beklemishev . So, the existing St. Nicholas Church in the records of 1625 was called "The Great Miracle Worker Nicola beyond the Berseneva grid" [1] .
History
In the years 1737-1745 Bersenevskaya embankment was strengthened by piles and became a driveway with a width of 4 to 11 fathoms; in the district at that time there were 25 courtyards stretched across the island [1] . The fire of 1812 destroyed all the wooden buildings, the restoration dragged on until the 1840s.
In 1885, the construction of the Einem confectionery factory, now Red October , began on the embankment. A native of Württemberg , Theodore Einem himself died in 1878; the constructed factory actually belonged to his companion, Julius Gays of the Black Forest . [2] In 1906, on the site of a part of the Vino-Salt Yard, a power plant operating today was built, which fed the Moscow tram ( MOGES-2 , Bolotnaya embankment , 2). In the 1930s, the embankment was lined with granite, the arrow of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal were designed according to the design of I. A. Frantsuz with gentle steps that smoothly envelop the cape of the island [3] .
In 2004, the first stage of the Patriarchal Bridge opened, providing a convenient approach to the nearest metro station ( Kropotkinskaya ). Since that time, the formation of an art cluster on the territory of the Red October factory began (production was withdrawn from Bersenevskaya Embankment in 2007 ). The former factory premises house the Strelka Institute , the Red October Gallery , and several clubs.
