Charles Grangean was born into the family of Dieudonne Francois Grange ( Fr. François Dieudonné Grandjean ) and Jeanne Malets ( Fr. Jeanne Maletz ). On February 13, 1794, he married Maria Magdalene Fasbourg ( French: Phasbourg Marie-Madeleine ; 1767-1840), the elder sister of the future Marshal Georges Mouton . They had two children: Victor Eme (November 7, 1794) and Octavia (April 17, 1798).

Having begun his early service, by 1792 he rose to the rank of junior lieutenant in the 105th Infantry Regiment, and this year he served in the Rhine Army under the command of General Kyustin ; captain of the headquarters at Dese in 1793. In May 1799 he took a fortified camp in Pastrengo , and captured 1,200 enemy soldiers from Adige , for which he was promoted to brigadier generals right on the battlefield. Twice wounded in the battle of Trebbia, again distinguished himself in the battle of Stockach, Engen, Oberhausen. He commanded the reserve division under Hohenlinden, and distinguished himself by a swift attack, which overturned the Hungarian corps.

He was promoted to Brigadier General on February 1, 1805. August 31, 1805 headed the 2nd Infantry Division of the Reserve Corps. He served under Marshal Brun , with whom he won the Swedish Pomerania . In 1807, Marshal Mortier gave him command over the troops in Stralsund, but was forced to resign in August. In 1808, in the ranks of the Spanish Army, under the leadership of Marshals Lannes and Monsay , he participated in the defeat of the rebels at Lerina ; commanded an infantry division during the siege of Zaragoza in 1809. He fought with his usual courage at Wagram, where two horses were killed under him. In the Russian campaign, he commanded a division of the 10th corps and was part of the Danzig garrison. He distinguished himself in a number of battles, and was among the prisoners after the surrender of the city.

He was awarded the military cross of St. Louis in 1814, and during the Hundred Days he commanded the 7th Infantry Division of the 5th Corps of the Rhine Army. He was elected deputy from the Department of Murt in 1821, and was a member of the opposition.
