Viktor Nikolayevich Orlov (born September 14, 1937) is a theriologist , cytogeneticist , taxonomist , author of several mammalian taxa .

Biography
Born in the city of Klintsy, Bryansk region. In 1959 he graduated from the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Faculty of Biology and Soil, Moscow State University . In 1959-1972 he worked at the biology faculty of Moscow State University. He defended his thesis on cranial cranianology under the guidance of V. G. Geptner [1] . Since 1972, in IEMEZh them. A. N. Severtsova Academy of Sciences of the USSR (later IPEE RAS ). In 1975 he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences on the topic "Problems of Mammalian Karyosystematics" [2] . A long-term participant in the Integrated Soviet-Mongolian Biological Expedition, he led the theriological detachment many times, huge collections of mammals and reptiles are stored in the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University. He worked and collected material in Ethiopia [1] and Vietnam. He headed the laboratory at IPEE.
Laureate of the USSR State Prize for 1990 in the field of natural sciences for a comprehensive study of mammals (taxonomy, ecology, protection) (together with V. E. Sokolov , V. N. Bolshakov , I. A. Shilov , N. N. Vorontsov , I . M. Gromov and L. S. Lavrov ). By 2014, Chief Researcher, Laboratory for Microevolution of Mammals, IPEE [2] . Vice-president of Theriological Society at the RAS [3] . Member of the expert council of the Higher Attestation Commission for Biological Sciences (2006) [4] .

- Microtus subarvalis Meyer , Orlov & Skholl, 1972, a double species of the common vole, the later name was synonymous with Microtus levis Miller, 1908, but this is the first work to show species isolation from Microtus arvalis .
