History

Henry Carey, 1st Viscount Falkland

Lucius Carey, 2nd Viscount Falkland

The Viscount Falkland title was created on November 10, 1620 for Sir Henry Carey (c. 1575-1633), who was actually an Englishman and had nothing to do with Scotland. Along with the Viscountry, he received the title of Lord Carey ( Peeley of Scotland ). He was a member of the House of Commons from Hertfordshire (1601-1622) and deputy governor of Ireland (1622-1629). His son and successor, Lucius Carey, 2nd Viscount Falkland (1610-1643), was a prominent statesman. He was a member of the House of Commons from Newport to the Isle of Wight (1640–1642) and Lord Guardian of the Small Seal ( 1643 ). The latter’s youngest son, Henry Carey, 4th Viscount Falkland (1634-1663), who succeeded his older brother, was a member of the House of Commons of England from Arundel ( 1660 ) and Oxford (1660-1661), and also served as Lord Lieutenant of the county of Oxfordshire ( 1660-1663). His son, Anthony Carey, 5th Viscount Falkland (1656–1694), represented several counties in the House of Commons of England and served as First Lord of the Admiralty (1693–1694). The Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic were named after him.

In 1694, after the death of Anthony Carey, the 5th Viscount of Falkland, the relative was inherited by the relative, Lucius Henry Carey, 6th Viscount of Falkland (1687-1730). He was the grandson of the Honorable Patrick Carey (c. 1623-1657), the fifth son of the 1st Viscount Falkland. An adherent of the Roman Catholic faith and a supporter of the exiled royal family of the Stuarts . On December 13, 1722, James Francis Edward Stewart (the Jacobites considered him “King James III”) granted Lucius Henry Carey, 6th Viscount Falkland, the rank of Jacobite peer . His descendant, Lucius Bentink Carey, 10th Viscount Falkland (1803–1884), was a colonial administrator and liberal politician. In 1832, for him was the title of Baron Hansdon of Scutterskelfe in the county of Yorkshire (Peerstvo of the United Kingdom ). This title gave him an automatic seat in the House of Lords of Great Britain . In 1884, after the death of the 10th Viscount Falkland, the title of Baron Hansdon was interrupted, and the title of Viscount Falkland was inherited by his younger brother, Plantagenet Pirpoint Point Carey, 11th Viscount Falkland (1806-1886). He had the rank of admiral of the British Navy.

His nephew, Byron Plantagenet Carey, 12th Viscount Falkland (1845-1922), sat in the House of Lords of Great Britain as the Scottish representative peer (1894-1922). He was succeeded by his son, Lucius Plantagenet Carey, the 13th Viscount Falkland (1880–1961), and also served in the House of Lords as Scottish representative peer from 1922 to 1931 .

As of 2010 , the owner of the Viscount was his grandson , Lucius Edward William Plantagenet Carey, the 15th Viscount Falkland (born 1935 ), who inherited from his father in 1984 . He is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who have retained their seats in the House of Lords since the adoption of the 1999 Peer Act . He is an independent deputy.

The Viscount Falkland statue stands at St. Stephens Hall in the Palace of Westminster, where the British Parliament meets. On April 27, 1909, suffragist Marjorie Hume chained herself to the Viscount Falkland statue, shouting: "Deeds, not words."
