Consul Suffect of the Roman Empire
83 year
Birth

Nigrin came from a horseman family . He was a native of the city of Lyria , located in Tarracon Spain [1] . His family, apparently, had roots among the local population [2] , and probably got his generic name “Cornelius” on the board of Octavian Augustus , when Lyria acquired the status of a municipality. It is known about the poet Curia Materna, mentioned by Tacitus . Most likely, Mark was the son of Cornelius Nigrin and Curation of Materna, the poet’s sister [3] . His name may also indicate that he was adopted by Senator Curiae Matern [4] .

During the reign of Vespasian, about 70 years old, Nigrin was a military tribune in the XIV Pair Legion , located in Mogontziak . He was included in the Senate, probably in 73/74, during the joint censorship of Vespasian and his son Titus [5] . Then Nigrin was on a post of the legate of the VIII Augustow legion in Upper Germany . From 79 to 82, he was legate prophet of the province of Aquitaine. In 83, Nigrin served as consul-suffice [6] .

After the Dacian invasion of Moesia in 85 and the death of the governor of the province of Moesia , it was divided into two parts. Nigrin was appointed governor of Lower Moesia around 85/86 and remained in this post until about 88/89 [7] . He took part in the wars of Domitian on the Danube border and was awarded four crowns, four honorary spears and four banners. He had the most awards among the military leaders of the Domitian era. Between 93/95 and 97, Nigrin led Syria [8] .

At one time, Nigrin was considered a possible successor to Nerva , but in the end he adopted Trajan , who was adopted. After the adoption of Trajan, Nigrin was released from the authority of the governor of Syria and retired to his hometown. It is sometimes believed that Nigrin was the second time the consul-suffect between September and November of 97 [9] , however, the consul-suffix of 97 is more often identified with Lucius Pomponius Matern.
