Biography
The youngest son of the Swedish commander and politician Jacob Delagardi ( 1583 - 1652 ) and his wife Ebba Brahe ( 1596 - 1674 ). His grandfather Pontus Delagardi ( 1520 - 1585 ) was a French military leader who entered the Swedish service.
Axel Julius Delagardi quickly climbed the career ladder in the Swedish army: in 1656 he became major of the Royal Life Guard, in September 1660 he was appointed colonel of the Westergötland Cavalry Regiment, in 1664 he became major general of the cavalry and colonel of the royal life guard.
Since 1674, Delagardi - a member of the Swedish Riksroda , a year later became Field Marshal Lieutenant . In 1676 he was appointed commander of the troops in Finland and Ingermanland , where his main task was to organize defense against a potential Russian attack. In 1677, he was responsible for the defense of the provinces of Jämtland and Bergslagen from the Danish-Norwegian state .
From 1687 to 1704, Delagardi was Governor General of Estonia . In this post, he encouraged the Ostsee German nobility [6] . After the outbreak of the Northern War, he led the defense of this province from the Russian army of Peter I. After the setbacks in 1704, he was recalled to Sweden, retaining his place in Riksrod.
Family
Since 1664, Axel Julius Delagardi was married to Sofia Juliana Forbus ( 1649 - 1701 ), the daughter of the Swedish general and member of the Riksrod, Arvid Forbus (1598-1665). The spouse had three sons:
- Adam Carl Delagardi (1664-1721)
- Magnus Julius Delagardi (1668-1741)
- Pontus Fredrik Delagardi (1669-1717)
