Olcott (Moon Crater)

Olcott Crater ( lat. Olcott ) - a large young impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the American lawyer and amateur astronomer William Alcott (1873-1936) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater dates back to the Eratosthenes period [1] .

Crater Description

A shot of the crater from the side of Apollo 14 .

The closest neighbors of the crater are the crater Polzunov in the north-north-west; Meggers Crater in the northeast; Kostinsky crater in the south-south-east and Chan-Khan crater in the west-south-west [2] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 79.9 km [3] , depth 2.8 km [1] .

Olcott Crater has a polygonal shape with a protrusion in the southern part and is practically not destroyed. The eastern part of the crater partially overlaps the satellite crater Olcott E. The shaft is clearly defined, the inner slope of the shaft is terraced, the southern and western parts of the inner slope are indented by numerous valleys. The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 1360 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 6100 km³ [1] . The bottom of the bowl is crossed, with an abundance of small hills and short ridges. The complex of central peaks is somewhat shifted north-east of the center of the bowl and consists of anorthosite (A), gabbro – norito – troctolite anorthositis with plagioclase content of 85-90% (GNTA1) and gabbro-norito-troctolite anorthositis with plagioclase content of 80-85% (GNTA2). [4] .

The southeastern part of the bowl and the surrounding area adjacent to the crater in this place have a low albedo .
