Battle Path
The 197th Infantry Division under the command of Colonel M.I. Zaporozhchenko was transferred to the Stalingrad area on July 12, 1942. [1] For the first time she entered the battle at Stalingrad in July 1942 as part of the 63rd Army (from November 1, the 1st Guards Army), in which she fought until early December. In the course of fierce defensive battles in the area of Vyoshenskaya , Elanskaya units of the division, in cooperation with other units of the army, repulsed the offensive of the German forces and on the night of August 19-20 they themselves launched an offensive. Forcing the river. Don along the cables stretched over the water in the Yelanskaya area, they seized a bridgehead on the right bank of the river, called Yelansky, which was later used by Soviet troops during a counteroffensive. In these battles, the division destroyed up to 2 thousand soldiers and officers of the enemy, a lot of military equipment and weapons. During the counteroffensive of the Soviet troops near Stalingrad and the liberation of Donbass by them, the division, in cooperation with other formations of the 1st Guards Army (from December 5, 1942, the 3rd guards A), fought over 200 km, liberated 170 settlements, including Voroshilovgrad (Feb. 14, 1943), captured up to 8,000 prisoners and large trophies.
On January 3, 1943, “for the courage, courage and heroism shown in the battles with the German fascist invaders” was reorganized into the 59th Guards Rifle Division .
The war ended as the 59th Guards Rifle Kramatorsk Red Banner Orders of Suvorov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky Division
