Biography
Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich was born on December 16 (28), 1875 in Tiflis .
At birth, he was appointed chief of the 161st Infantry Regiment of Alexandropol. During the baptism, Alexei Mikhailovich was entrusted with the signs of the highest order of the Russian Empire - the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First-Called , the orders of the Holy Right Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky , the White Eagle , the Holy Great Martyr Anna of the I degree, St. Stanislav of the I degree.
Alex was a smart and handsome young man. He was very fond of Emperor Alexander III , and as a child, Alexei often played with his sons. In 1881, the family of Mikhail Nikolaevich moved to St. Petersburg , where Alex received his home education, enrolled in the Naval College . The educator of the Grand Duke was Colonel V. A. Schilder (later heading the Imperial Alexander Lyceum ). In October 1894 he was released from the Marine Corps with the rank of midshipman .
Around 1890, Alexei Mikhailovich began to collect a collection of postage stamps. Despite his young years, the Grand Duke became one of the serious collectors of stamps . He was acquainted with many prominent philatelists , with the director of the Berlin Postal Museum , and with the staff of philatelic magazines. Alexey Mikhailovich was an Honorary Member of the St. Petersburg branch of the Dresden International Brand Society and a member of the London Brand Society .
Being baptized in the Orthodox faith , Alexei Mikhailovich, according to his internal religious beliefs, belonged rather to Protestantism , which was unusual among the Romanovs.
Unlike older brothers, Alexei Mikhailovich did not have good health. After graduating from the Marine Corps, he had to go to sea. Once Alexei fell into a storm and he began bilateral pneumonia , which grew into a short-term consumption . In 1894, Alexei Mikhailovich went to San Remo for treatment, but the doctors were powerless. On February 18 (March 2), 1895, he died of tuberculosis before he reached the age of 20. He was buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral . The Grand Duke Alexei Mikhailovich was buried in the form of a midshipman, although he was not destined to wear it during his lifetime. His brother Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich spoke about his fate:
“Although I was attached to him more than to anyone from the whole family, I do not regret that he died. An intelligent boy with an open heart and absolute sincerity, he terribly suffered in the atmosphere of the palace . ”
