History

The independent existence of the Kholmsk diocese begins in 1285. Until then, the entire Kholmsko-Podlyashsky Rus was part of the Vladimir-Volyn diocese .

Daniel Romanovich , Prince Vladimir-Volynsky, in the first half of the XIII century, first established a diocese in Ugrovsk, and then transferred it to the Hill . In the ΧΙV century, it belonged to the Galician Metropolis .

In the 1370s, the Roman curia began to introduce Catholicism into the Diocese of Holm; Catholic priests appear, build Catholic churches and gradually seize land belonging to the Russian clergy.

For about half of the 15th century, a Catholic episcopal chair was established in Kholm, transferred at the end of the 15th century, first to Hrubieszhov , and then to Red Stav .

In the 16th century, out of ten Orthodox bishops, not one showed vigorous activity for the benefit of the Orthodox Church and the Russian people; the decline of the Greek rite and the Russian population increased.

Since 1569, when the Bishop of Holm Dionysius Sbirovsky signed up to the act establishing the church union, two bishops appeared in the Kholmsk diocese - Orthodox and Uniate. The Orthodox party went to Podlasie , to the Yablochinsky monastery , where Orthodoxy held out longer and in the 18th century there were several Orthodox parishes.

Under the Zborovsky Treaty (1650), the Kiephel Diocese was annexed to the Orthodox Kyiv Metropolis . Kiev Metropolitan Sylvester Kossov , occupying Hill, expelled the Uniate bishop from there. The defeat inflicted on the Cossacks under Berestechko turned the case back in favor of the union, which by the end of the seventeenth century had spread throughout the Kholmsk diocese.
