Description
According to reviewers from Consequence of Sound , “Something from Nothing” is a “ferocious, sometimes even hypnotic” song “with hints of funk, psychedelia” and “loud growl” by Dave Grohl [4] . The song begins with the sound of a muffled guitar and gradually moves on to “non-stop ferocious rock and roll” [5] and “deafening ending with burning guitar riffs” [4] . The song uses the sound of guitars that reminded Daniel Kreps from Rolling Stone magazine of the Chicago band The Smashing Pumpkins . According to him, the lines of the song “Here lies a city on fire ... it started with a spark, and burned into the dark” (“Here lies a city on fire ... it started with a spark and flared up into darkness”) were inspired by the great Chicago fire of 1871 [2] .
A video was shot for the song, in which Foo Fighters musicians performed “Something from Nothing” at Electrical Audio Studios, throughout which animated lines of its text appear on the screen [6] [7] .
The song debuted on the fifth line on the Billboard Rock Airplay chart, as well as on the 12th and 16th lines in Alternative Songs and Mainstream Rock [8] , topping all three charts. “Something from Nothing” became the twenty-fifth single of Foo Fighters topping the Top 75 in the UK Singles Chart , [9] and the twenty-seventh topping the Top 100 of the Australian Singles Chart .
