Biography
Simon is the son of Count Bernhard VIII of Lippsky and his wife Catherine, daughter of Philip III of Waldeck-Eisenberg and Anna of Cleves. At the time of the death of his father, Simon was a minor, and his uncle Herman Simon of Pyrmont was appointed regent under him until 1579.
Simon was a Renaissance man, smart, open to new sciences, maintaining contact with many great men of his time, including Tycho Brahe and Jost Burgi . The court adviser and chamberlain of the Holy Roman Emperor , Simon, on behalf of Emperor Rudolph II, carried out various diplomatic missions to resolve hereditary disputes between the princes. In addition, he acted as an intermediary and agent for the sale of paintings from the Netherlands .
In 1584-1589, the Bracke fortress in Lemgo, which was secured by Christophe Donop in 1562-1570, was rebuilt into a palace in the style of the Weser Renaissance . Until the death of the count, the castle remained his residence. Under Simon VI, the Reformation was carried out in Lippe County, which led to significant contradictions with the free Hanseatic city of Lemgo, which has been Lutheran since 1522. Lemgo opposed the edict ordering the adoption of a reformed religion, which resulted in the so-called "Lemgov unrest." Confessional conflict was settled in 1617 by the Reerentrup Peace Agreement.
The library of Count Simon performed representative functions, nevertheless it was a collection of professional politician and diplomat, which presented theological and historical works, as well as philosophical and state literature, which later formed the basis of the Detmold Land Library of the Lippe House .
After the death of Simon, his son Elder Simon VII Lippsky came to power in Lipp , who returned the residence to Detmold. The second son of Simon VI, Otto Lippe-Bracky, founded the Lippe-Bracke line , and the youngest son Philip I - the Schaumburg-Lippe line , which subsequently ruled from Bukkeburg .
