The Swiss, whose army was commanded by the Bernese knight Rudolf von Erlach, formed a thousand-strong phalanx, and the Bavarians went around. The battle was preceded by an 11-day siege of Laupen by the 12,000-strong Habsburg army led by Ludwig of Bavaria and Bishop Basel Johann II von Munsingen .
The siege was interrupted on June 21, 1339 by the reinforcements of 6 thousand people from Bern who arrived in time, with the support of the Swiss Union , which in 1323 entered into an alliance with Bern.
Victory in the battle served to further rally the cantons of Switzerland .
