The following two additions were later released to the game:
- Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter - 2001 ;
- The free Trials of the Luremaster add-on, which is essentially a “add-on add-on," because the game requires the installed add-on Heart of Winter.
In September 2002, Black Isle Studios released the second part of the game - Icewind Dale 2 . The game takes place in the same world, but thirty years after the events of the first part.
In 2014, the game was reissued under the name Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition . The publication includes both official additions. The game was adapted to modern screen resolutions, improved the interface and added new gaming features.
Content
Gameplay
The same as in Baldur's Gate with only minor changes.
Story
The game takes place in the Valley of the Ice Wind - the northern region of Faerun behind the Ridge of the World, in the game universe of the Forgotten Kingdoms - a fantasy world (setting) for the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) .
The developers originally planned to connect the plot of the game with the events of the same name trilogy of the writer Robert Salvatore , but in the end the game was postponed several decades before the events of the book, so some book plot twists and characters in the game are absent, for example, Drizzt Do'Urden and Bruenor Battlehammer are not mentioned . .
The player starts the game by creating a team of 6 adventurers (the number of characters depends on the desire of the player), which, as the plot develops, become guards of the caravan and become participants in strange events. Subsequently, the player finds out about the demonic feud that threatens the Ten cities of the Valley of the icy wind.
Development
Icewind Dale was developed on the two-dimensional game engine Infinity Engine , in which pre-drawn backgrounds and sprite characters are displayed in isometric projection. The engine was also used in previous Black Isle Studios games - Planescape: Torment , Baldur's Gate and others.
Criticism Reviews
Icewind Dale received positive reviews from critics [13] in terms of gameplay and musical design [9] , later it was compared with Diablo . However, some critics pointed to the similarity of the game with previous games on the Infinity Engine [8] [10] .
