The Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education "Volgograd State University" (FGAOU VO VolSU) is one of the largest higher educational institutions of the Volgograd region . It was founded in 1980 .

The structure of VolSU includes 11 institutes; about 50 special and university departments , 28 areas of magistracy , 44 areas of bachelor training, 3 specialties; postgraduate studies (in 42 specialties) and doctoral studies (in 9 specialties). There is a system of continuing professional education that implements the Presidential program for training managerial personnel and programs for professional retraining, a double diploma, and professional development. More than 12 thousand students and graduate students are constantly studying.
Content
University History
In 1972, the Volgograd Regional Committee of the CPSU decided on the need to create a state university in the city.
On June 21, 1974, Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 510 on the organization of a state university in Volgograd was issued; October 30 of the same year - Order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the RSFSR No. 469 on the organization of Volgograd State University.
The opening took place in 1980 ; At the same time, the first 250 students entered the Faculty of Natural and Human Sciences in 5 specialties.
In the future, 10 institutes, a scientific library, 21 scientific and educational centers, 182 educational programs, a scientific publishing house, etc. were created; branches were opened in Volzhsky and Uryupinsk (see below ).
As of 2012, 40,000 graduates completed their studies at VolSU, 12,000 students, post-graduate students, doctoral students, students studied, 1,800 employees and teachers were in the service [1] .
The university is a member of the Eurasian Association of Universities [2] , the Association of Classical Universities of Russia [3] , the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature [4]
In 2014 and 2015, the university was included in the list of the best universities in the BRICS countries (151 places; according to the British international consulting agency Quacquarelli Symonds) [5] [6] [7] . Partnerships are maintained with MV Lomonosov Moscow State University , St. Petersburg State University , Cologne University , Sorbonne , Inholland ( Netherlands ) and others [8] .
In 2015, the university celebrated its 35th anniversary [9] , enrolling, at the beginning of the school year, more than 1300 freshmen. The structure of the university includes the Volzhsky Humanitarian Institute ( Volzhsky ; director Sevostyanov Maxim Vladimirovich). [13]
Closed
The Uryupinsky branch of VolSU ( Uryupinsk ) [14] , closed in 2015 [15] [16] [17] also worked.
VolSU had faculties in Kalach-on-Don , Mikhailovka , Frolovo , Akhtubinsk ; were closed during the reform on the liquidation of correspondence branches of Volgograd universities, which was carried out by the administration of the Volgograd region.
Since January 2016, by order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation No. 1558 “On the Reorganization of the Volgograd State University” Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education and the Volgograd State Social and Pedagogical University Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education ”transferred to VolSU former branch of VGSPU in the city of Mikhailovka [18] , but on December 21, 2016 the order was canceled. There is an extensive library , including a rare book department, which contains pre-revolutionary publications, documents of the 20-30s of the XX century and modern books of artistic value. VolSU has a publishing house , founded in 1995 , annually producing more than 25 thousand copies of printed materials [26] .
Since 1996, the scientific journal "Bulletin of the Volgograd State University" has been published.
Since 2001, an interdisciplinary collection of scientific papers “Research of Young Scientists” has been published.
Museum Complex
The museum fund was created in 1996 (the opening took place in 1997 ) at the initiative of the rector O. V. Inshakov and has more than 2500 exhibits. The museum complex includes: Museum of the History of VolSU, Museum of Cadet Regiments, Cabinet Museum of Academician V.I. Borkovsky, Museums of Archeology, Anthropology, Ethnology. [27]
The history of the formation and development of the university and the entire university life are presented: the construction of the university, administration, structural units, scientific and sports activities, faculties and scientific schools. On the stands and windows of the Museum there are materials telling about people associated with the history of VolSU. The exposition of the Museum is replenished.
The complex is also involved in compiling a Chronicle of University Life; The first issue of the book, dedicated to the events of 2005-2009, was published on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the university in 2010 .
