This is an anti-war protest song that describes all wars as “civilian” and claims that war only “feeds the rich while burying the poor” (feeds the rich while it buries the poor). In the song, singer Axl Rose asks: "In any case, what is generally civilian in war?" ("What's so civil about war, anyway?").

History

Slash claimed that the original song was an instrumental written by him just before the band went on tour in Japan as part of the Appetite for Destruction world tour. Axl Rose wrote the text, and the composition was finalized to a full song during a sound check in the Australian Melbourne [1] . On September 27, 1993, Duff McKagan told Rockline in an interview how the song appeared:

Basically it was a reef that we would like to do on soundchecks. Axl came up with a couple of lines at the beginning. And ... I went on a peace march when I was a little kid, with my mom. I was about four years old. For Martin Luther King . And so, when: “Did you wear a black bandage on your hand after they shot a man who said:“ Can the world last forever? ”” This is just a truly life experience, true [2] .

It's just true-life experiences, really.

The song was recorded earlier than the others included in the albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, and became the only one where drummer Stephen Adler plays the drums, soon replaced by Matt Sorum .

The song was released as a single in 1993 in several regions. Several regions in which she was not released saw the light of The Civil Civil's EP mini-album. The single "Civil War" reached number four on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock chart.
