Distribution and habitat
Known from Albania , Belgium , Great Britain ( England ), Denmark (including the Faroe Islands ), Finland , France , Ireland , Switzerland , Spain , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Montenegro , Croatia , Serbia (including Kosovo), Portugal , Norway , Poland , Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania , Russia (the European part), Belarus , Ukraine , Georgia , Armenia , Turkey (peninsula Asia Minor ) and Sweden . It may also grow in Germany [5] .
It occurs on dry rocky slopes, pastures, and fringes [6] .
Botanical Description
A spiky deciduous shrub [2] 0.5-1.5 m high [6] .
The leaves are complex, oval or elliptical [2] , soft, double-serrated, gray-green in color, covered with glandular hairs below [6] ; placed alternately [2] . The leaves have a tarry smell [6] .
The flowers are large, single or collected in an inflorescence of 2-3; serrated petals, ranging in color from pink to light purple [6] .
The fruit is a glandular-hairy spherical multi-root red in color [6] .
It blooms in June and July [6] .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 [7] .
