Description
The settlement serves the . In summer and autumn the waters are ice-free, in winter the main transport of the locals is sled dogs. Ammassivik is the postal center of the region, a postal ship arrives here regularly.
Near the settlement there are two sheep farms with a population of 10-15 people, on the opposite fjord, 7 kilometers in a straight line, - the abandoned village of , founded in 1774 and for a long time the former largest settlement of Greenland.
History
The settlement was founded in 1889 under the name Sletten . In 1899, a school working to the present day was opened by Danish missionaries: in the 2005/2006 school year, 6 children were enrolled in it. In 1922, the settlement received the status of trading station . From January 1, 2009, after an administrative reform, Ammassivik passed from the municipality of Nanortalik into subjection to the Kuiallek commune.
Demographics
At the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, almost all of the settlements in Southern Greenland are losing their inhabitants. In Ammassivik, the population decline rate is one of the highest: from 1996 to 2010, its population was reduced by half, from 149 to 74 people, and the 2015 estimate reports already about “about 30 inhabitants” [1] .
