Newcom (Moon Crater)

Newcomb Crater ( Latin Newcomb ), not to be confused with Newcom Crater on Mars , is a large young impact crater in the northeastern region of the Taurus Mountains on the visible side of the Moon . The name was given in honor of the American astronomer , mathematician and economist Simon Newcom (1835-1909) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater belongs to the Eratosthenes period [1] .

Crater Description

The immediate neighbors of the crater are the Kirchhoff crater in the west; Mori Crater in the north-north-west; Berzelius Crater in the northeast; Debes Crater in the east; Macrobius crater in the south-south-east and Römer crater in the south-west. In the northwest of Newcom Crater is the Lake of Dreams ; in the southeast of the Sea of Crises ; in the south is Lake of Justice ; in the southwest Bay of Love [2] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 39.8 km [3] , depth 2180 m [4] .

Newcom Crater has a polygonal shape and is slightly destroyed. The shaft with a clearly defined edge, the south-south-western part of the shaft is blocked by the satellite crater Newcom A (see below). The inner slope of the shaft is terraced, at the foot of the northern and western parts of the slope, traces of collapse are visible. The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 1040 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 1300 km³ [1] . The bottom of the bowl is crossed, with many ridges concentric with respect to the shaft. The central peak is somewhat shifted west of the center of the bowl and consists of gabbro - norito - troctolite anorthosite with a plagioclase content of 85-90% (GNTA1) and gabbro-norito-troctolite anorthosite with a plagioclase content of 80-85% (GNTA2). [5] . The height of the central peak is about 1000 m [6] .
