The center conducts research in the field of consciousness and free will, interacts with the foreign scientific community and popularizes analytical philosophy.
History
Since 2009, at the invitation of ICIC, leading Western scholars have arrived at Moscow State University and other educational institutions of Russia - American denominator of cognitive science, head of the Tufts University Cognitive Research Center Daniel Dennett [2] , Canadian-Canadian neurophysiologists [1] [3] Patricia Churchland , British philosopher Timothy Williamson [4] [5] , New York University professor Jesse Prince [6] .
In 2011, John Searle, the founder of criticism of cognitive psychology, gave a course of lectures in Moscow.
In June 2014, under the auspices of the ICIS, the international conference "Problems of Consciousness and Free Will in Analytical Philosophy" was held. Assessing its results, The Guardian newspaper indicated that several dozens of the most famous world scientists involved in research in the field of consciousness and collaborating with the Center for Consciousness Research at Moscow State University were guests of the event. Of these, the correspondent of the publication identified David Chalmers , Daniel Dennett and the spouses Churchland [7] . Under the project, graduate students and young scientists from different countries gathered to discuss current philosophical problems under the guidance of experts [8] .
| Discussion sessions took place ... Two camps immediately formed - monists led by Dennett and dualists who defend the reality of subjective representations and believe that consciousness cannot be explained by processes in the brain. The leader of this camp was David Chalmers. There were more monists, since Dennett himself invited philosophers, and he was pleased with the choice. “I've never met such a high level of discussion,” Dennett wrote in response to a Forbes question. “We all talked and argued about a lot, but there was neither arrogance, nor quarrels, it was an unforgettable meeting of great minds” [1] . |
In August 2014, the Center organized a summer educational school “Free will and moral responsibility” at Moscow State University [9] with the participation of a leading specialist on free will, Professor John Fisher .
In the summer of 2016, the second summer school “Freedom of Will and Consciousness” was held in Riga, during which the students discussed current philosophical problems with the famous expert, professor of Cornell University Derk Perebum [10] . The project was attended by representatives of leading universities: Harvard, Oxford, University of California, University of Helsinki, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University.
The Center for the Study of Consciousness conducts extensive publishing activities, including the publication of a series of scientific monographs “Philosophy of Consciousness”, prepared by Russian and foreign partners of the ICIS [11] .
