History

The title of Marquis Sligo was created on December 29, 1800 for John Brown, 3rd Earl of Altamont (1756-1809). The title of Marquis Sligo has auxiliary titles: Baron Mount Eagle from Westport in Mayo County (created September 18, 1760 ), Viscount Westport from Westport in Mayo County (created August 24, 1768 ), Count Altamont from Mayo County (created in 1800 ) and Baron Montigle from Westport in Mayo County (established February 20, 1806 ). All of these titles are the Pearsty of Ireland , with the exception of the barony of Montigl, which is part of the United Kingdom's Pearsty system. The title of Baron Montigl gave the Marquises of Sligo the automatic right to a seat in the House of Lords of Great Britain before the adoption of the 1999 Act of the House of Lords . The 6th Marquis of Sligo received the title of Count Clanricard in 1916 .

The Browns family comes from Colonel John Brown, the youngest son of Sir John Brown, 1st Baronet (d. 1670 ), from the Nile to Mayo County . The eldest son of the latter, George Brown, 2nd Baronet (d. 1698 ), became the ancestor of the Barons Kilmayne. The title of baronet was created in 1636 for Colonel John Brown. John Brown (1709-1776), grandson of Colonel John Brown, represented Castlebar in the Irish House of Commons (1744-1760). He received the titles of Baron Mount Eagle (1760), Viscount Westport (1768) and Earl of Altamont (1771). He was succeeded by his eldest son, Peter Brown, 2nd Earl of Altamont (1731-1780), representing Mayo County in the Irish Parliament (1761-1768). He was succeeded by his eldest son, John Denise Brown, 3rd Earl of Altamont (1756-1809), who also represented Jamestown in the Irish House of Commons (1776-1780). In 1800, the latter was elected one of the 28 Irish peers-representatives in the House of Lords of Great Britain and received the title of Marquis Sligo .

In 1806, John Brown, 1st Marquis of Sligo, received the title of Baron Montigl in the United Kingdom’s Peersty system, which gave him and his descendants an automatic seat in the House of Lords of Great Britain . He was succeeded by his son, Howe Peter Brown, 2nd Marquis of Sligo (1788-1845). He served as Lord Lieutenant of Mayo County (1831–1845) and Governor of Jamaica (1834–1836). Lord Sligo married Catherine de Burgh, the eldest daughter of John Thomas de Burgh, 13th Earl of Clanricard (1744-1808).

In 1800, Lord Clanricard received the new title of Count Clanricard with the right to inherit for the male descendants of his two daughters. Lord Sligo's youngest son, John Thomas Brown, 4th Marquis of Sligo (1824–1903), represented Mayo County in the House of Commons of Great Britain (1857–1868). His nephew , George Ulic Brown, 6th Marquis of Sligo (1856–1935), inherited the county of Clanricard (Creation of 1800), in 1916 after the death of his cousin Hubert George de Burg-Canning, 2nd Marquis of Clanricard (1832– 1916).
