Biography

Born around 1800; First he served in the army, was a brigade and divisional adjutant, then he switched to the civil service and, finally, was engaged exclusively in literary activity.

In 1816 he published the “Offering to the New 1816” (M. 1816). Then came: “A Brief Monument for Field Officers” (St. Petersburg, 1818) and “The Discourse on a Singer in the Camp of Russian Soldiers” (1822), “A Singer Among Russian Soldiers” (1823). His poems have been published in magazines since 1819.

From 1824 to 1831 he published almanacs: The May Leaf, Sirius, The Northern Star, and The Garland .

In 1830, Bestuzhev began to publish the literary newspaper " Northern Mercury ": in 1830 there were 138 issues, instead of the planned 156, in 1831 only 75, and in 1832 only 5. In the almanacs and in this newspaper, Bestuzhev published many critical and polemical articles, mostly under the pseudonym Aristarchus the Covenant; the largest of these articles is devoted to Venevitinov and his writings (Sev. Zvezda, 1829 and Sev. Bee, 1829, nos. 22–24, 47, 49, and 50).

The Bestuzhev newspaper was supported most of all by amateur writers, Nikolai Alexandrovich Tatishchev and Alexander Nikolayevich Glebov; also collaborated in it: A. I. Podolinsky , A. D. Illichevsky , Baron Rosen, D. Shepelev and others. Because of Bestuzhev’s personal enmity with A. F. Voeikov between “Northern Mercury” and “Literary Additions to the Russian Disabled ”, Published by Voeikov, there was a strong polemic, escalated to the point that Voeikov began to bother about expelling Bestuzhev from the capital.

The literary significance is not great. Part of the poem is an imitation of contemporary romantic luminaries, especially Byron , part of it is satirical and full of excursions into the field of modern literature (especially a separate dialogue is published: “Mavra Vlasyevna Tomskaya and Frol Savich Kalugin.” - St. Petersburg, 1828). Bestuzhev’s critical and polemical articles are interesting only as examples of journal clashes of the time; Bestuzhev met Boris Godunov with mockery, and in Podolinsky he saw Pushkin as a serious rival.
