The son of Guy II . Inherited from his father during the life of his grandfather - Guillaume I. He adopted a coat of arms similar to a Burgundy one (the dukes of Burgundy were his grandmother's relatives).
At the beginning of his reign, he fought with Bernard III, Senor Saint-Valery, over border castles. Then they concluded a treaty according to which the castle of Crotoy departed to the count, and Domar, Berney and Bernaville - to the lord Saint-Valery.
In 1168, Jean I refused to let the troops of the English king Henry II through his possessions, since he was at war with France. In response, the British burned several villages in the county of Pontier.
In 1190, Jean I went on a crusade as part of the detachment of King Philip Augustus and died in the siege of Acre . Buried in the abbey of Saint-Joss-a-Bois.
Jean I was married three times:
- Mago
- Laura, daughter of Bernard III de Saint-Valery (divorce)
- Beatrice, daughter of Anselm de Camdaven , Count of Saint-Paul.
Children (all from Beatrice):
- Guillaume II (d. 1221), Count of Pontier
- Adele, wife of Tom de Saint-Valery
- Margarita, wife of Angerran de Pikigny, Vidam Amiens
- Elena, wife of Guillaume d'Estutville.
Jean I de Pontieux is also known for donating a piece of forest to the leper colony of the Abbey of Saint-Riquier.
