Biography

Victor Amadeus is the son of Prince Christian II of Anhalt-Bernburg (1599-1566) and his wife Eleonora Sophia of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1603-1675), daughter of Duke Johann Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . The duke of Savoy Victor Amadeus I became the godfather of the prince. The prince grew up in Leiden under the supervision of the theologian Friedrich Spanheim . After the death of his elder brother Erdman Gideon in 1649, Victor Amadeus was appointed heir to the throne in Anhalt-Bernburg, accompanied his father on trips and carried out diplomatic missions.

Victor I Amadeus inherited his father in Anhalt-Bernburg in 1656 and made every effort to rebuild the country after the Thirty Years War . Together with other Anhalt princes in 1666, he approved new legislation. Victor Amadeus transformed the financial system and acquired new territories as a result of the extinction of the Anhalt-Bernburg-Harzgerode line in 1709. In 1677, Victor Amadeus introduced primogenity in Anhalt-Bernburg, nevertheless, in 1709 he allocated amt Hoim, with Zeitz and Belleben, to the possessions of Lebrecht’s younger son.
