Biography
Victor Amadeus is the son of Prince Christian II of Anhalt-Bernburg (1599-1566) and his wife Eleonora Sophia of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1603-1675), daughter of Duke Johann Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . The duke of Savoy Victor Amadeus I became the godfather of the prince. The prince grew up in Leiden under the supervision of the theologian Friedrich Spanheim . After the death of his elder brother Erdman Gideon in 1649, Victor Amadeus was appointed heir to the throne in Anhalt-Bernburg, accompanied his father on trips and carried out diplomatic missions.
Victor I Amadeus inherited his father in Anhalt-Bernburg in 1656 and made every effort to rebuild the country after the Thirty Years War . Together with other Anhalt princes in 1666, he approved new legislation. Victor Amadeus transformed the financial system and acquired new territories as a result of the extinction of the Anhalt-Bernburg-Harzgerode line in 1709. In 1677, Victor Amadeus introduced primogenity in Anhalt-Bernburg, nevertheless, in 1709 he allocated amt Hoim, with Zeitz and Belleben, to the possessions of Lebrecht’s younger son.
Victor Amadeus was in a fruitful society under the name "Glorified" ( Der Gerühmte ). In the last years of his life, Prince Victor Amadeus became blind and in fierce conflict with his eldest son, who entered into an inappropriate marriage. Buried in the palace church in Bernburg.
Family and descendants
On October 16, 1667 in Meisenheim, Victor Amadeus of Anhalt-Bernburg married Elizabeth of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, daughter of Palatine Count Friedrich Zweibrücken . Elizabeth died in childbirth of the fifth son.
