Biography
Marin Popescu was born on July 27, 1973 in the commune of Janku Jianu, Olt County.
The first serious success at the adult international level was achieved in 1992, when he got into the main team of the Romanian national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, won the right to defend the honor of the country at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona . He started alone at distances of 500 and 1000 meters, in the first case he took the eighth place in the finals, while in the second case he showed the fourth result in the decisive race, a little short of the prize positions.
In 1993, Popescu visited the World Championships in Copenhagen, from where he brought a bronze medal award, won in the standings of single kayaks at the kilometer distance - only Norwegian Knut Holmann and Dane Tor Nilsen were ahead in the final. A year later, he performed at the world championship in Mexico City, where he became the silver medalist in four at two hundred and five hundred meters - in both cases he lost to the finish crew from Russia.
Being one of the leaders of the rowing team of Romania, Marin Popescu successfully qualified for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta - he started alone in a thousand meters, reached the final and finished seventh in the last race. Soon after the end of these competitions, he decided to end his career as a professional athlete, giving way to the team of young Romanian rowers.
